Second Afghan War

The following battles of the Second Afghan War are described and illustrated under this title:

Battle of Ali Masjid: The opening battle of the Second Afghan War, fought on 21^st November 1878 in the Khyber Pass.

Battle of Peiwar Kotal:  The battle of the Second Afghan War, fought on 2^nd December 1878, in which General Frederick Roberts forced the western end of the Khyber Pass.

Battle of Futtehabad: The iconic engagement for the Queen’s Corps of Guides with the death of Major Wigram Battye, fought on 2^nd April 1879 in the Second Afghan War.

Battle of Charasiab:  The knife-edged battle, fought on 6^th October 1879 and won by the courage and resource of the British and Indian troops, that opened the way for Roberts to Kabul.

Battle of Kabul 1879:  The spectacular and hard-fought battle around the Sherpur Cantonment outside Kabul, that led on 23^rd December 1879 to the defeat of the Afghan tribesmen led by Mohammed Jan.

Battle of Ahmed Khel:  The narrowly-won battle, fought by the army of Lieutenant General Sir Donald Stewart on 19^th April 1880, during its march north to Kabul.

Battle of Maiwand: The battle fought on 27^th July 1880, where a force of British and Indian troops was overwhelmed by Afghan soldiers and tribesmen, a notorious Victorian military disaster.

Battle of Kandahar:  Battle of Kandahar, also known as the Battle of Baba Wali, fought on 1^st September 1880 and the last battle of the Second Afghan War; General Roberts’ crowning success after his march from Kabul.
